My first novel translation: “Doce años de esclavitud”
At the time, I was living in sleepy Bloomington, Illinois. I had wanted to see the movie, Twelve Years a Slave, but it hadn’t made it to town during its run. So, I figured I would have to wait until it came out on DVD to be able to watch it. But, after it was nominated for a number of Academy Awards, the film started making the rounds again. Lo and behold, one of the theaters in Bloomington decided to show it during the runup to the Oscars. It had been quite a while since I had been to a theater, so decided to go check it out. What an experience! I have never shed so many tears watching a movie, let alone in a movie theater. As soon as I got home after the movie finished, I did some online research and found there was not a version of the book translated to Spanish for Latin America. Por aquel entonces, yo vivía en la soñolienta ciudad de Bloomington, Illinois. Había querido ver la película Twelve Years a Slave, pero no había llegado a la ciudad durante su proyección. Así que pensé que tendría que esperar a que saliera en DVD para poder verla. Pero, después de que fuera nominada a varios premios de la Academia, la película empezó a circular de nuevo. Y resultó que uno de los cines de Bloomington decidió proyectarla durante el período previo a los Oscar. Hacía bastante tiempo que no iba al cine, así que decidí ir a verla. ¡Qué experiencia!
